Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the learner should:

  • Understand how dementia affects residents differently
  • Have a practical awareness of how to communicate and behave when caring for a resident with dementia, and
  • Be equipped with knowledge to recognise and assist in the treatment of dementia
Course Content

The understanding dementia course covers:

  • Some common forms of dementia and how they function
  • How to recognise symptoms and signs of dementia in residents
  • The importance of communcating and recording information
  • A person-centred approach to aged care, particularly in residents with dementia, and
  • Understanding different communication techniques
